September is Attendance Awareness Month, a perfect time to remind our students, families, and community that every day in school counts. Good attendance is more than just being present; it plays a critical role in student success both inside and outside the classroom.
Research shows that missing just two days of school each month adds up to nearly 10% of the school year. Students who are chronically absent (missing 10% or more of school days) are more likely to fall behind academically, struggle with reading proficiency, and face challenges graduating on time.
But the impact of attendance goes beyond academics. Being in school helps students build friendships, develop social skills, and strengthen connections with teachers and staff. These relationships support their confidence, motivation, and sense of belonging in school.
When students attend school regularly:
- They are more likely to meet grade-level expectations.
- They are more engaged in classroom activities.
- They have stronger peer relationships and better social-emotional growth.
- They are more likely to stay on track for high school graduation and future opportunities.
We also recognize that the occasional absence is inevitable whether due to illness, family emergencies, or other needs. When these moments arise, there are ways families can help minimize disruptions to student learning and growth:
- Communicate with the school about absences so teachers can provide missed work or guidance.
- Encourage routines at home to keep learning habits strong.
- Prioritize appointments outside of school hours when possible.
- Stay connected by checking classroom updates, assignments, and school messages.
Families, school, and communities all play a role in helping students attend every day. By working together, establishing routines, creating welcoming school environments, and removing barriers to attendance, we can make sure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
This month and all year long, let’s encourage our students to be present, engaged, and ready to learn. After all, every day counts!
